4 Stars Great Mic! My 1st Studio mic!
So happy to get my new mic it sound great but i have not rec with it so i give 4 star for the design, the sound, the price etc… so if u are look for a Studio mic that are around $80 THIS IS THE ONE!

5 Stars For the price this is it!
I have a couple other condensor mikes with shock mounts in the same price range, but this one is the best. Not sure you can do much better for anywhere near the price. I loaned one to a friend and he immediately returned his mike to the shop for one of these. Nice neutral sound, solid construction, I use it with a tube amp to get some non-linear compression for voice.

5 Stars Astonishing sound and value for well under 100 bucks!
I was especially fortunate and got a new one for around [...]

making this beautiful-sounding vocal mic

a spectacular bargain for the home-recording musician or audio-blogger.

I don’t know of any truly-decent large-diaphragm condensers with

the full 1″ diaphragm size for under [...] (don’t be a sucker for the

super-cheapies that look so big & cool). The AT2020 has a 2/3-inch diaphragm size, but

sounds better & bigger than anything else I have ever heard in the price range.

If you can spend [...]on a wonderful AT2035 or maybe a Studio Projects mic,

then by-all means, do it.

But the AT2020 [...]on all competition under [...], IMO.

I use it with the Studio Projects VTB1 Mic Preamp and the sound is B-I-G.

The AT2020 and the VTB1 are definitely a sweet pair together.

Although, I suspect any decent preamp used properly with the AT2020

would sound pretty darn good.

And DO use a preamp, even if only a $30 Art Tube MP.

Count on buying the 2 items together.

The pre will “send your AT2020 to the gym”, by giving it

a thicker, fuller, BETTER sound.

The thing to remember with preamps is to

try to get close to the *loudest possible clean sound*

coming out of the preamp and generate

a BIG signal going IN to the recording device, which should

have its input gain quite LOW (maybe like “2″ or even “1″).

Watch your clipping/overload levels,

listen for any audible noise or distortion in the recording,

and make adjustments to cut those sound flaws, if they are present.

For vocals,

Experiment with going as loud as you can from the preamp while still sounding CLEAN,

until you find you particular setup’s “sweet spot”.

“Straight-up” dial-settings is often around where you end up.

The AT2020, used with a decent pre like the one I have (there are many others),

should get you a serious studio vocal sound

with pro-quality clarity and little coloration.

IMO, it’s got to be the world champ of under-[...]studio Condenser Mics,

at least right now (in 2009),

until something more miraculous comes along.

And if you are presently recording vocals with

something like an SM58, moving up to the AT2020

with a modest preamp will absolutely blow your mind–Much “bigger” sounding,

with much finer detail, presence and clarity.

I hear this mic is good for miking electric guitar cabs

and various percussion too.

But voice is its forte, I believe.

It’s a gem.

5 Stars Great Value
Let’s face it…I’m just a hobby musician. A guy in his mid-30′s who has tinkered with music most of his adult life. I’ve played both as a solo artist and with bands. I’ve also been fortunate enough to spend time in actual recording studios with true professionals. None of this qualifies me as an expert…but I do have a certain level of familiarity on the subject.

I purchased this mic to supplement my home studio. I was hoping to get a little better sound than my usual stable of dynamic mics provide. I think I got pretty lucky with this purchase – it’s my understanding that in this particular price range, you shouldn’t expect a whole lot. I mean, it’s just a microphone, right?

What I will say is that I was certainly satisfied with my purchase. I’ve used this microphone in conjunction with a tube preamp on a handful of recordings with great success. I bought this with the intention of using it for vocals, but I’ve found that I actually prefer it to record my acoustic guitar – this microphone picks up all the sound that I’m looking for from my acoustic – it’s the nice, mellow, and full bodied sound that I hear when I’m playing, but that I was never able to capture before. In terms of its originally intended use, I felt is was only a slight improvement over the SM58 that I typically used for vocals – however, I wouldn’t put too much stock into my assessment, as vocals are not one of my strengths when it comes to music (let’s face it, autotune was created for a reason, right?)

Granted – everyone is going to have different opinions of this product, and I happen to think it works great for those of us on a budget. In terms of value – it is a great product for a fantastic price. I liked this microphone so much, I plan on buying at least one more.

4 Stars AT2020
This is a wonderful microphone. I use it to record interviews in the field instead of a shotgun set up. It is more hassle to use because it requires phantom power. But it provides a clean, clear, warm voice print.

I also plan to use it to record my children’s musical performances here at home. So for home concerts and for my field work, this mic works for me.

The legendary Shure vocal mic is tuned to accentuate the warmth and clarity of lead and back-up vocals. Consistently the first choice of performers around the globe. The Shure SM58 is a unidirectional (cardioid) dynamic vocal microphone designed for professional vocal use in live performance, sound reinforcement, and studio recording. A highly effective, built-in, spherical filter minimizes wind and breath “pop” noise. A cardioid pickup pattern isolates the main sound source while minimizing unwanted background noise. The SM58 has a tailored vocal response for a sound, which is a world standard. Rugged construction, a proven shock mount system, and a steel mesh grille ensure that even with rough handling, the SM58 will perform consistently. Outdoors or indoors, singing, speech – the SM58 is the overwhelming choice of professionals. The SM58S model includes on/off switch.

5 Stars Good general choice for live vocal use
I upgraded to a pair of these from some cheapie Radio Shack unbalanced connector-type mics I was borrowing from a friend. When used at an annual live stage event, the improvement was marked and noticeable to several non-golden-eared onlookers who commented positively. The specs which state a high end response of 15K seem disappointing to me on paper, but the reality of how good these sound is convincing enough for me. I say that as someone who can pick out a lot of detail in sound.

1 Star Stay Away from this seller
Seller tried to sneak the standard SM58 (without the on-off switch) into my order TWICE. I spent nearly $20 on shipping and tracking to return the incorrect order, had to file a complaint with Amazon, and I’m still out $100. Beware- the seller has no phone number you can call, they don’t answer your emails either.

I am not sure whether this was an open box item or not. The selling price was less than the new price on most sites. Have been pleased. No reason to complain about the performance of the item. Delivery was speedy.

The CAD U37 USB Condenser Microphone combines a high-quality large diaphragm condenser with USB connectivity. The U37 USB provides a smooth, extended frequency response that is excellent for singing, speech and instruments. A bass roll off switch and a 10 dB pad make this one of the most versatile USB microphones we carry. The U37 also features a cardioid pick-up pattern that helps to minimize background noise and isolate the main sound source. Includes a desktop microphone stand for easy placement.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Best value for money USB Microphone for Computer
I had been researching USB Microphones for a long time and was nervous to make a selection, incase I ended up with a lemon. Well I just heard about this microphone a couple of weeks ago and read up on CAD Microphones. I took the plunge and bought this little beauty. It is made of a plastic casing, but don’t let that put you off – this is obviously the trade off in getting a good quality USB for under $100. It’s the inside heart of the microphone which makes it a great mic. Yes it is sensitive in picking up background noise, but I don’t mind. I love that this mic has the ability to pick up a full texture of sound in the room. I also like that it records with very low background hiss, which is a big problem with integrated mics in laptops.

One important thing to remember with any USB mic is to know how to open up it’s settings on your computer. When I first connected the U37 to my computer, it defaulted its input sound level to practically zero. It is in this setting that I have learnt to control the sensitivity of the microphone.

9/10 for this microphone. You won’t be disappointed. Peace Out

2 Stars works okay, but not the best solution
The CAD u37 isn’t as great as I thought it would be. The mic is very noisy and picks up way to much ambient noise. The other problem is with Logic Pro 9, it had way too much latency to be useful. I actually had to activate low latency mode and set my buffer size much lower than with any other usb audio device I’ve used, and sometimes it would still have latency. I am fairly disappointed as I had hoped it would be plug and play. I did like the quality of the microphone, maybe not the warmest microphone but has a lot of clarity to it which is nice. I would recommend this for podcasts or something where the timing of the recording is not critical. Another problem with USB mics is that they cannot be upgraded. If you are serious about getting nice semi-professional quality from microphones, I would suggest getting an actual xlr condenser with an audio input device with a phantom power supply like the line 6 ux2. Would probably be a better investment for you seeing as all you would have to do to upgrade is just purchase a better condenser. Will be returning this product.

4 Stars Great mic, but picks up environmental noise
The CAD U37 is a great mic for the money, but you have to be willing to tolerate its desire to capture ambient noise. If you’re around a noisy computer, for example, it will capture that sound. If you are in an echo-prone room, it will pick up any echos. You might like this for multiple people to be gathered around a single mic and speak or play an acoustic number, but if you want something akin to an isolated sound where your voice and only your voice is registered amid a din of activity, you’ll be disappointed.

I have not fiddled very much with the two settings on the microphone. I have kept the buttons facing to the left (if you are looking at the CAD logo (facing up) on the microphone).

What gives the SM57 the reputation of a workhorse? Maybe the fact that the Shure SM57 is versatile in application, durable, and reliable. It has been used by the President of the United States for the past 30 years, and put to the test on stage and on tour by artists such as Stewart Copeland, AC/DC, and the Stone Temple Pilots, as well as famed producer Daniel Lanois, to name a few. It can be dropped down six flights of stairs then dunked in a glass of water and still perform like it just came out of the box (please don’t try this at home). The SM57 has become a standard in the musician’s arsenal thanks to the extremely effective cardioid pickup pattern, which isolates the main sound source while minimizing background noise. It is ideal for close miking: guitar and bass amps; snare drums, toms, and congas; and brass instruments. The SM57 performs great on stage and in the recording studio.Ask most any recording engineer what the best microphone is for miking a snare drum and their answer will be the Shure SM57. Many believe that it is the baseline standard microphone for recording instruments. The SM57 demonstrates its versatility by also being ideal for vocal applications. Michael Jackson used the SM57 to record the famous Billie Jean in 1982; Cyndi Lauper sings into the SM57; and President Bush is still speaking to the country with the SM57.The SM57 is ideal for night-after-night touring and is deserving of its workhorse designation. But, if you really can’t relate to Michael Jackson, Cyndi Lauper, Stewart Copeland, AC/DC, Stone Temple Pilots, or the President of the United States, take it from consumers like yourself. Most people consider this to be the most versatile mic in their arsenal.

5 Stars Great for vocals or instruments!
People will try to tell you that the sm58 is a better vocal mic, it’s not true. The sm58 is designed to enhance only the sounds that fall within a certain range (the vocal range as decided by shure). This mic accurately portrays both vocals, miked instruments, acoustic instruments, and even some drums. I say some because we haven’t tried the bass drum, might work for that as well, or might be too much, I don’t know. Regardless, for a versatile mic that will last you as long as you need it to, buy the sm57.

1 Star Watch out for counterfeit Shure 57 Microphones!
I just recently bought two 57′s from two different Amazon dealers at a very cheap price of $70. After testing these microphones with other Shure 57′s and having a couple of expert local sound technicians spec-out the microphones, we discovered that these microphones were total counterfeits. True Shure microphones are typically very high quality microphones when they are direct from the Shure factory. If you go for the deal, check your microphone as soon as it arrives. If there are problems with your high-end being very sensitive and feeding-back and you have no low-end, it’s probably a counterfeit. Shure 57′s are pretty well balanced across the board with very little adjustments on your EQ.

Go ahead, pay a higher price and buy them from your local music dealer or from an Internet store that you trust. There are counterfeits out there…be careful!!!

I normally rate genuine Shure 57 Microphones as 5-stars.

4 Stars One Half Of Shure’s Long Lasting Dynamic Duo
Considering that the SM57 was introduced to the world in 1967, a year after the Shure SM58LC Shure SM58 Vocal Microphone, I guess the 58 gets Batman status, relegating the 57 to that of Robin. But that’s not really a fair assessment considering the 57 and 58 were developed at the same time, and except for the 58′s acoustic foam lined cage pop screen, the two mics are identical electrically.

The SM (Studio Microphone) 57 was designed to begin it’s life in a recording studio, as a dynamic microphone used to mic the ever increasing volume of rock and roll amplifiers, drum kits, etc. In that capacity, it had no use for the pop screen of it’s cousin the SM58, still one of the most sold vocal mics in the world to this day. So the SM57 slimmed down and even though it’s still a fine vocal mic, you’ll see it used mostly mic’ing instruments, which it excels at.

One of it’s long time and most important roles has been the official podium mic for the White House. A pair of SM57′s is always seen on various White House podiums for press conferences and there is even a VIP bundled kit Shure SM57 VIP Dual Microphone Kit you can buy for this exact type of use.

The SM57 is an extremely rugged mic, built to tough standards and can take lots of road abuse. That’s one of the things that makes it popular with touring bands and sound companies. And on top of that, it’s just a great sounding mic for the price.

There is a Performer Series Shure Beta 57A Microphone that looks very similar to the SM57 but the Beta 57 has a different mic capsule and transformer and sounds different. So make sure you try before you buy.

Bottom line is the Shure SM57 is one tough road mic that sounds awesome and is not overly priced. A best value for sound companies, home studio recordists and touring musicians.

4 Stars good of course
What else is there to say other than legendary? It is sturdy, but does not get as good of a sound as I expected. Maybe, it was too hyped up by everyone. I often use it for vocals during practice. When it comes to recording, I found my MXL condenser sounds warmer and more full.

5 Stars good price great mic
If you know the sure 57′s then you know the timeless quality of this mic for snare and guitar cab micking. Good price

Not much to say here The Shure SM58 is the gold standard in dynamic microphones. You really can’t go wrong with one of these. The SM58 has been used on countless records and almost every stage in the world!

Rather not spend the cash on a Shure SM58?? Check out the PG58 for the same great sound and an even better value!

The legendary Shure vocal mic is tuned to accentuate the warmth and clarity of lead and back-up vocals. It’s consistently the first choice of performers around the globe.

5 Stars Microphone works great
Shure microphone in place in our lunchroom. Works fine. Easy to connect and disconnect.

5 Stars Great mic
I bought this mic about a month ago, its really great. Sounds very clear, and audible. The tone isn’t completely accurate, but most of that has to do with my recording device. Anywho, its a good mic, and I hear its durable. I’ll be writing another review after I drop it down a flight of stairs, to see just how o.0 (I’ve heard its THAT durable, but I’m not really clumsy so…)

5 Stars A podcast gem!
I bought this microphone after reading many reviews on Amazon.com, magazines, advice of friends. I have started my own series of podcasts, and this microphone is exactly what another reviewer says: A WORKHORSE!

Coupled with the M-Audio USB Fast Track, i am able to use this in my office / studio setup, as well as take it on the road for location podcasts.

I highly recommend this microphone. Good price for the quality, longevity and most importantly sound quality.

5 Stars Great product
The SM 58 produces very clear and crisp tones. Also has a nice, balanced weight, at the same time is pretty sturdy. I think it is an excellent buy for the price.

5 Stars The most famous!
This is with out a doubt the most famous microphone in the world.

It is resistant, very resistant, that’s why I recommend it for live shows, gigs, talks, etc.

The sound is great!!

Compared to microphones from other great brands as jts, peavey and fender the sound of the SM58 is more clearer and more defined,.

No wonder is the choice of many many professionals for singing, for vocals and fot backround voices.

Even though is a little bit more expensive than other brands, the quality of sound and durability and resistance of the materials make the justification of the price.

I have seen that most professionals prefer the SM-58 without on/off switch. Tahe note on that detail, they say it sounds a little better, for my experience I couldn’t hear the difference, but it is a point to consider.

On the other hand, if you want an even better and more expensive vocal microphone, you may want to check the Beta 58A.

Please note this microphones are made specially for vocals, not for instrument pickup, if you need one for instruments such as a guitar, harmonica, or wind instruments, you may need a Shure SM-57. It works for vocals too! but is not as resistant as the SM-58 that’s why I prefer it.

In conclusion it is a good buy, and you will never repent to have the most famous microphone in the world in your studio and in your giggs.
